Kolmar Korea develops scalp sunscreen and opens a new category in sun care

Kolmar Korea, a South Korean manufacturer with a strong presence in developing products for global brands, launched Scalp Sun Essence , an SPF 50+ sunscreen designed for the scalp. This product addresses a known formulation limitation: sunscreens are often combined with oils that, when applied to hair, can weigh it down and create a build-up effect. After two years of research, the team achieved a combination of water-soluble and oil-soluble components that results in a lightweight texture, with an application similar to an essence, and without altering the hair's finish.

The product focuses on an area that receives direct sun exposure and is rarely protected. Prolonged radiation can cause scalp inflammation and affect the hair follicle. Based on this observation, Kolmar is expanding its sun care products to include hair care . The company is already working on additional formats such as mist and spray, as well as specific cleansers to remove these types of products.

The launch introduces a category with low adoption rates globally. Sunscreen remains concentrated on face and body, while scalp care is still largely absent from routines in most markets.

The innovation model observed in Korea is based on identifying underserved areas and developing specific solutions. This approach has allowed K-beauty to maintain international relevance through products that address specific needs. Rising temperatures and prolonged sun exposure are driving the conversation toward more consistent sun protection. In this context, new areas of development are emerging within sun care.

In Latin America, sun care is prevalent, but it remains focused on the face. Scalp care is not part of the daily routine, despite the high levels of radiation in countries like Mexico. This presents an opportunity for education and developing a service-oriented approach.

The scalp presents different conditions than facial skin. The presence of hair, sebum production, and sensitivity to residues require adjustments in the formulation. The development of lightweight, fast-absorbing textures allows the product to blend seamlessly without interfering with styling or the feel of the hair. This is key for continuous use. The approach to hair care is also broadened. The scalp is now included in the routine for prevention, not just treatment. The introduction of formats like sprays facilitates reapplication throughout the day. Incorporating new areas into the care routine modifies the overall structure without changing its fundamental nature, expanding the scope of protection.

The scalp is rarely part of the in-office diagnosis.

Including it involves observing another area, asking new questions, and adjusting recommendations. The value lies in identifying what the client isn't considering and making it visible within the service.
